I Hate George Bush!

Of course not, but I intend to rant about those who do.

The Supreme Court decision in the Presidential election of 2000 instructed the Florida Supreme Court to follow the Constitution of Florida. It did not steal the election for George Bush. It did not install an unelected President. It reversed a decision that the majority of justices felt was in violation of the laws of the State of Florida. In the vote, one justice appointed by Bush's father voted aye and the other justice voted nay, splitting the Bush Senior vote.

Every recount of the disputed votes in Florida, conducted by all sorts of news media and other organizations, found that Bush won. The only way that Gore could have won Florida was to have every single disputed ballot counted as a Gore vote.

The Republican Party chose, deliberately, not to pursue fraud and misconduct in Minnesota, Missouri and New Mexico, that could have changed the vote counts in those states. The fraud and misconduct in Missouri were so flagrant that I am surprised the Republicans could refrain from court challenge.

The recession began in March 2001. Economists are in agreement that it was a Clinton recession, not a Bush one.

On September 11, 2001 George Bush had been President for eight months. During that eight months various intelligence sources suggested that a terror attack could occur against the United States. Leads were not followed up, and agencies failed to communicate with each other. Behavior patterns formed over long periods of time, say eight years of Clinton, not over the eight months of George Bush. At no time was there any intelligence that an act was going to occur on September 11, or that it would involve airliners being crashed into skyscrapers in New York City. There were a lot of pieces, but even in hindsight they do not add up to certain foreknowledge of the murders that took place on September 11.

Investigations of the events leading up to September 11 are all well and good, but we must recall the most important fact. The murders on September 11 were committed by men who ordered or carried out the acts, and chose to commit those murders. Buildings collapse from fire and explosion all the time. It should surprise no one that the WTC did. While engineers stand to learn a great deal about structural design from the collapse, the proximate cause of the deaths of all those people was the men who chose to commit those murders. Investigations that attempt to shift that blame are wrong and harmful to the interests of the United States.

George Bush has a degree from Yale and a Masters Degree from Harvard. This makes him as educated as Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton. It also means that he isn't dimwitted or stupid.

George Bush believes in God. He admits that he drank too much and committed other sins when he was younger. Neither of these things makes him dimwitted or stupid. In fact, belief in God and having done stupid things when you were younger is as American as apple pie. Ask Jesse Jackson.

George Bush speaks with an accent. He sometimes uses incorrect vocabulary or mispronounces words. Neither of these things makes him dimwitted or stupid. Ask Jesse Jackson. It makes him a human being, fallible, and a lot like you and I. I'd rather have a President who can't pronounce nuclear correctly than one who commits adultery in the Oval Office.

George Bush is not the smartest President that we have ever had. Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter are probably that. Neither had anything like a successful presidency, however. Being a successful President is about your team and how well they work together. So far Bushs team seems to be working well together. Bush appears to be a good manager, and that is a trait that I want in an American President.

He and his team also seem to be taking a longer view of the world and of America than any recent administration. Their actions seem to be calculated towards achieving results in the longer term, two, four, ten years down the road. The goals are not overnight success and acclaim, but real and lasting progress.

Supporting this President requires more patience than were used to. Do Americans have that patience? Once we, as a nation, lose the ability to focus on long term goals, we lose much of what has made us a great nation. The ability to sacrifice in the short term to achieve in the long term has been the American way of life. I hope it continues to be.
