Sunday, August 31, 2003Labor DaySomehow, this became a union holiday, not a working man's holiday. Union members were never the majority of workers in the United States. And, unionism is far, far different today than it was when John L. Lewis organized. The largest block of union workers today are our employees, you know, public employees. Ain't that a kick? Mom and Dad were both union, but both recognized that the railroad unions were as much to blame as any for the decline of the railroads. Hell, when unions developed their own payroll, so that you could be a union rep and never have worked in the job or industry, that was a bad sign. Really, when was the last time the head of the Teamsters actually drove a truck or moved a load? When did the head of the United Auto Workers last touch a wrench to a car frame? The rise of professional unionists was a bad thing for unions. And I refuse to honor those men and women on Labor Day. I will honor the men and women of the unions, and the non-union workers. Their day to day efforts made, and continue to make, America the most productive nation on the planet. Poor people in America are far richer than anywhere else in the world, and that is because of the America that hard work built. Ordinary joes, working hard, building slowly the great nation that we enjoy today. Happy Labor Day, Americans! And thank you for your efforts. We appreciate them. -- posted by Chuck at Sunday, August 31, 2003 | E-mail | Permalink | Main | 0 comments
