E-mail to Centcom

I sent the following e-mail to the press offices of Central Command and to the press office in Baghdad.
Central Command has reduced significantly the number and information content of press releases concerning the efforts to rebuild Iraq. These release are used by many of us to provide proof to news media and to our fellow citizens that we are making progress in Iraq. These releases are seen by thousands of private citizens via the Internet. My own, tiny web site gets dozens of hits per day through searches for particular military units that are featured in your press releases.

This lack of "good news" gives the appearance that we have stopped our rebuilding efforts. It also over emphasizes the casualties and attacks on our forces.

You are losing the media battle here in the States by this inaction. You must resume the detailed press releases that you were producing earlier in the year, featuring the good news that things are improving. The only news that we are getting are e-mails and letters from troops, and the news media are featuring the complainers, not those setting the record straight.

Please don't lose the peace by not telling the good news.

All of a sudden, the detailed releases that I used to post here titled "Good News from Iraq" have disappeared. I'm sure the work goes on. For some odd reason, the press office is choosing not to publicize it. The picture we see in the news media is almost exclusively about attacks and losses, and the whiney e-mails from some of the troops. The e-mails and blogs of other troops who tout the successes in Iraq are ignored, and partly because Centcom is not sending out the press releases.

We could have another Vietnam, due to their failure to wage an effective public relations campaign.
