Iraq, Plus 70

Iraq, seventy days after its liberation. What kind of shape is it in? What are the trends? Where are we headed and when will we get out?

Lots of questions and very few answers. Oh, people are answering them, because they have the answers to hand, ready, before the question is asked. But the true anwers to these and other questions will only be found in the future. It's far too early to answer them now.

Most of the pundits are failing to recognize that the people of Iraq, the majority of the people of Iraq, are quite happy that Saddam is gone. They worry about our resolve, and fear his return because of our possible cowardice. In the Shia south and Kurdish north, the people are very happy.

It's the Sunni center that's upset. It's the Sunni center that was the heart of the thugocracy that Saddam and the Tikrit Mafia ran for so many years. People in Baghdad had food, electricity, health care, while out in the burbs, the non-Sunni areas of the country, people did without. Now the tables have turned. Supplies are equalized throughout the country, which means less for the center. And the thugs are located in the center, conducting their terrorism and crime in the center. So, yeah, things suck right now if you are a Baathist functionary in Baghdad.

Boo Freakin' Hoo!

One of the worst cultural traits that Arabs have is their incessant whining. Nothing is ever their fault. It is the will of Allah or some evil done to them by another. The news media lap it up. Nothing sells paper like some guy bitching about his life and how bad the Americans have made it.

They never ask "So, who is your neighborhood is blowing up electrical transformers and cutting the power for your air conditioning?" "Which of your neighbors worked for Saddam's security serivces?" "What did you do in the old regime?"

So far, the media only seems to be able to find low level party members. Curious, that. All those Indians and no Chiefs.

Let's look at the facts a bit.

  • Who is blowing up electrical infrastructure and cutting power to Iraqis? Iraqis
  • Who looted the museums and hospitals? Iraqis
  • Who killed all those people we're finding in those mass graves? Iraqis
  • Who's blowing up oil piplines, costing Iraqis hundreds of thousands of dollars in oil revenues? Iraqis
I could go on but the answers would be the same. The Iraqis were responsible for their own misery before the war, and they are responsible for their own misery now. When they start standing up to the thugs and criminals, working with us to build something, then their lives will start to improve. To paraphrase Chris Rock, just because you're poor doesn't mean you can't pick up the garbage in your own front yard. Get off your ass, quit your whining, and do something for yourself.
